It does depend on the plane type--CR7, CR9, especially E70, I may need the overhead space and will want to board early. But if it's a CR2, I 100% agree with you--the less time spent on that thing, the better.
Also, getting on a little late could be a slight advantage, as the last-on 'pink-tag' bags are often first off.
