You're right that it doesn't hurt but unfortunately it never seems to work; the FL is one area where the agents seem to play strictly to the rules. I was recently flying MIA-YVR in First as a 2MM EXP and was refused entry as although the flights were transcon they were not Transcon if you see what I mean.
