Yes, this topic has been beaten to death, but:

Sorry, john, but it IS possible for an iPod (or any electronic device) to interfere with systems. Note that nothing might come of said interference, but it exists. Anytime you have an electrical current, it generates a magnetic field which in turn influences electrical systems around it.

That said, I'm sure the reason is number 2 like you described.
