LAX-RAR will normally be on 767 (space+ seats) but sometimes on 777 (premium economy seats). Either way the seats are a little worse than 747 premium economy, and on 767 food & beverage is economy not business class standard.

I definitely prefer lower deck premium economy on 747. Much smaller cabin, don't have to look at the nice business class beds in front of you (upper deck shared with business class) and a little quicker off the a/c.

Op-ups are fairly rare on NZ. As *G you'll rank behind NZ*E and NZ*G passengers, of which there are likely to be several on your flights.

Upgrade for points. Assuming you mean non-NZ points, then this requires an expensive booking class, and so may or may not be available to you.

Transit in Asia is much nicer than at LAX. However, a stopover in the islands is nicer still. For the sake of a couple of hours of unpleasantness at LAX I'd think it is worth it.

Depends on what you want to do. Different island groups are better suited for some purposes than others.

While not expensive, it is a significant back-track to RAR and will take up 1/2 a day each way travelling (with possibility of middle of the night flights). Of course there are also closer islands you can get to, to reduce the amount of back-tracking.

C on TG is rather poor. I can't comment on premium economy on SK.
