The official reply was that I'd need to buy at least 'seat+bag' to then 'enable' my *G baggage benefits.

Which is a huge disappointment as NZ has basically removed *G benefits from the most expensive (business) and least expensive (seat only) fares.
I haven't spent too much time on this issue but I have voted with my wallet and booked for the first time in year all upcoming longhauls without any NZ sector and will continue to use QF TT.
