I probably should not even reply to this one since I am clueless, but I can speculate...since your companion has no status, maybe DL wants to be sure that you are actually with him/her, because this companion is only eligible for upgrade while with you. Of course the computer should know that you have checked in.

What if you failed to claim your seat? Would your companion with an upgraded BP still be allowed to board? I don't know.
