You are right, but the guarantee only applied to the former BEA Shuttle flights - GLA, MAN, EDI, BFS - where passengers needed no booking, or even a ticket. You just turned up and went and paid on board by cash, credit card or cheque. (There was no catering, the "cabin service" was fare collection.)
I was in the army in those heady days with a wee Fife girl friend in Kirkcaldy. I paid for quite a few full fare tickets (£50 each way) until her canny father introduced me to British Caledonian where you got food on board for lower fares!
