Welcome to FT! There's no way to transfer your miles from Aeroplan to UA, but you can redeem your Aeroplan miles for flights on any *A airline including UA, CO, or US. Switching to CO (at least initially) might be your best bet because you can go a lot of places nonstop from their hub at EWR. After the merger with UA goes through then any CO miles you've earned and your elite status will be transferred over. UA is fairly weak in the NYC area save for frequent flights from JFK-SFO/LAX, and LGA-ORD. That will change after the merger.

Since my initial post I have learned about the concept of status match. However, I've also realized it doesn't really make sense for me at this point. So I will stay with AC for this year, qualify again for AC*P or AC*E for 2011 (depending on the amount of travel over the next 6 months), and then decide in January whether I want to status match with UA or CO pending the status of the merger at that point.
