Indeed, I thought it was interesting as well, but I didn't want to make a big fuss about it on the forum.
The flight was oversold (although no bumps ended up being required). I checked the flight the night before on aa.com, and for the segment I was upgraded on (MCI-STL) I could see the entire cabin, although it would not let me choose a seat in business. Even more oddly, it had eliminated the option to burn an e-upgrade on the segment.
When I swiped my gold card at the kiosk the day of the flight, it displayed the business class section and told me to pick a seat!
