You can use a major credit card to swipe to start the kiosk process. I did it when I was sent a temporary paper GLD card (as part of a targeted GLD Challenge), during the initial test and rollout, since I had the status, but not the magnetic card.

As a result, I'm sure that for any Add/Collect functions, like the standby fees, or purchasing enough upgrades for a particular segment, there will be a message saying, "There is a charge for this service. Please swipe a major credit card to continue."
