They try to take your checked bag back before you board the shuttle bus; you then need to pick it up again at the main baggage area. The first time I fly NRT-SJC, this delayed me 45 minutes. Subsequently I have maintained an iron grip on my bag and taken it with me on the shuttle.
Hopefully, with the new International facilities opening soon, this will be history and at least part of SJC will move out of the 1960s.
