It's a good thought, cranki, and it was my first instinct.
However, I've got a connecting flight on JAL from HKG-NRT when I initially check in, and I'm not sure the pious by-the-book types at JAL will agree to check in luggage for me on a HKG-NRT-LAS ticket only as far as the invisible SJC connection. (my LAS-SJC run is on another itinerary). But I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask, and then do as you suggest. You know, that's a "free" solution, too (providing AA doesn't get some whizbang who says 'hey we made a mistake, let's take the initiative to send this on the next flight to LAS for Mr. SST' while I'm going down and back!). I guess my handwritten bagtag saying "hey, please hold this at SJC for me" might work here, too.
Thanks for the suggestion, which is helping to open my eyes to develop a definite plan.
