Interesting point. Even though there was nobody directly next to you, the reclining guy in front was de facto blocking your way.

Of course, if you take an aisle seat then you could be blocking the guy at the window who must wake you to get up.

So the middle seat becomes the only fail safe way to assure your own easy access to your seat without you blocking anybody else.
