If the dog is housebroken this shouldn't be a problem. The OP will have the opportunity to walk Fido during the change at DFW and presumably Fido will do his/her business (if necessary) at that time.

Sometimes taking an animal on a plane is unavoidable. The bottom line: AA allows people to put their pets on the plane - either in the cabin as carry on or if larger animals, in the cargo hold - so whether or not you personally would do it isn't the issue here.
