I was wondering if it makes sense to switch FF programs from Aeroplan to Mileage Plus (and if so, if there is a way to transfer my existing miles over).
If I were to stay with Aeroplan, I was planning on getting the Amex SPG card, since SPG points can be converted into Aeroplan miles on a 1-to-1 basis. Aeroplan has also offered me a complimentary Gold SPG membership, though I'm not sure if that even matters.
If I were to switch to Mileage Plus, I was thinking of getting the MP Visa Signature or MP Visa Select card from Chase.
If anyone has any input, insight, or general advice for someone in my position, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if some of these questions are ridiculous...but I'm a complete newbie at this.
Thanks!

Welcome to FT! There's no way to transfer your miles from Aeroplan to UA, but you can redeem your Aeroplan miles for flights on any *A airline including UA, CO, or US. Switching to CO (at least initially) might be your best bet because you can go a lot of places nonstop from their hub at EWR. After the merger with UA goes through then any CO miles you've earned and your elite status will be transferred over. UA is fairly weak in the NYC area save for frequent flights from JFK-SFO/LAX, and LGA-ORD. That will change after the merger.
