It was until 2002. There were a few dozen people there when I visited in 2001. It was packed when I went there later.
Telluride over Christmas seemed pretty quiet last year. I recall waiting in line once in 4 days. The locals said it was crowded, of course. I'd definitely return. 1 1/2 hour drive from Montrose. (Our hotel provided a free shuttle. Get groceries in Montrose before the drive to Telluride.)
