I had a look at the AA program a few weeks back. A big disadvantage compared to Aeroplan (as far as I could tell, anyway) was that AA Platinum members do not get access to special award inventory. In Aeroplan, an Elite member can get an award ticket for any unsold seat in the Y cabin. This is a big advantage, and can save thousands of dollars for last minute travel.
