There are 2 ways to earn AA elite status - miles or points.

Earning Platinum by miles (for Canadians) requires 35,000 miles. Regardless of the fare class purchased you earn 100% Q-miles, no COS bonuses.

Earning Platinum by points requires 35,000 points. Earning via points is ideal for those who fly mostly in F or J, or a combination of F/J and full fare Y. F earns 150% points, J 125% points, Y 100% points, and discount economy 50% points.

That's why I said if you were to do all your flying in F, you can earn Platinum status on AA for as little as 23,334 miles. (through points)
