I don't consider transferring miles to be cheap (or even reasonable). With a $30 processing fee + 1 cent per mile and a 1,000 mile minimum, there are much cheaper alternatives, such as those already presented.

You mention that you purchased your miles in the 2-for-1 special; Delta is running that promo again now, but only if you're a Delta SkyMiles Credit Card member (which I should probably assume you're not, since if you were, you probably wouldn't be in the scenario you're in).

I've had little problem booking flights at 25K; I find it requires flexibility in dates and airports. If you're in close proximity to only one and have a fixed destination and fixed dates in mind, then you're most likely going to be looking at higher costs.

Keep in mind that you can EARN or REDEEM miles to keep your account active. I recommend reviewing both the "Ways to Earn Miles" and "Use Miles" section of the Delta web site. Find something that you do, want, or could use (or gift).

FWIW, my dad & I once kept his account active by having me buy something via SkyMiles Shopping while under his account number.
