cheapest way to extend mileage?

My husband and I each have a bit over 25,00 SkyMiles, some of which were purchased at the 2for1 offer a while back. We thought we would use them as both sets of parents are elderly and we would need a quick trip to see one of them. But all parents are doing well and both sets of miles are expiring, one this August. I emailed Delta, I could buy something to extend miles, or I could transfer my husbands miles to me. Then I would have 50,000 miles which I hoped I could use for a flight to Manchester, England this September, which as it turns out costs 90,000 miles, must be a high demand city..... Delta said if he transfers his miles to me, my miles would be extended another two years. But for some reason I do not believe that, even though they sent me an email stating that. Is there something I could purchase for $5 that would extend his miles? We used to be able to book a flight in the U.S. for 25,000 miles, is that unrealistic these days?
