There are currently no 2-class services SYD-LAX. SYD-LAX is one of QF's top routes, and it's unlikely that they would give up Y+ and F on that route.
SYD-SFO is also a 4 class flight IIRC. Checking a few random dates in Jan 2011, it's all 4 class. I suppose it's possible that F demand may not be high enough, so there'd be some F seats available at J pricing.
Also, if I stick with SYD-LAX and request upgrades (I need 4!) which is the best flight to choose?
From what class? (e.g. J -> F, I'd say you have no chance). Even Y -> J would be difficult for 4 people. However, it's impossible to say so far out in advance. Getting upgrades depends on what load is in the cabin you are going to, and we can't make any reliable prediction so far in advance. If you don't have status (Plat, maybe Gold), I would forget about it being a possibility.
