If the travel is going to be in 1st class, it would only take 12 to 20 US domestic segments to reach Gold on QF and is dead easy to get (imo). In economy it is triple that n could take a while to get.
If you join the QF club and then take this approach, when you attain gold, your membership will be suspended ( since the Gold card provides complimentary lounge access anyway ) and would get reactivated and the remaining time would be made available when your membership level drops below gold. Continue to Platinum and get access to the Flagship lounges on domestic trips ( which is a benefit not available to AA members at all )
