Another 'cultural' difference between US and Europe. Most (if not all) airlines would not let you fly on an earlier flight if you have baggage in transit. In Europe baggage is reconciled against passengers boarded. They will not allow for a situation when baggage is on board but passenger is not (the only exception are 'RUSHed' lost baggage, but these are subject to additional security checks).
