I just noticed the following was posted on AA.com. Can someone perhaps figure out how this is any different than the previous policy?

American has offered customers holding non-refundable tickets the flexibility to change itineraries since 1992. However, in order to simplify our processes, lower our operating costs, and continue to offer fares competitive with low-cost carriers, we have made the following changes to the rules for using non-refundable tickets:

For tickets purchased on or after August 30, 2002, with domestic itineraries (along with travel to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico) for travel date on or after October 1, 2002:
Customers must make any changes no later than the departure date of each ticketed flight segment
After the departure date, nonrefundable tickets will have no value
Changes may still be made to these tickets before the scheduled departure date, subject to certain restrictions and fees.
If a change is made to a nonrefundable ticket before the scheduled departure date, and the new ticket has a higher cost than the original ticket, an additional amount (the fare difference plus a change fee) will apply.
For itineraries with travel dates after October 1, 2002 that include international travel (not including travel to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), the following also apply:
A refund may be issued if there is a schedule change implemented by American Airlines
A refund may be issued if the passenger is ill or there is a death in the family*
If any part of the ticket is unused it has no value after the ticketed departure date. Subsequent ticket coupons also have no value.
*Not applicable to itineraries that include Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
