Keep in mind that American is making money by selling those AAdvantage miles to Citibank and other partners. In fact they probably "profit" more by someone charging $2,000,000 on their Citibank card than someone going on a bunch of mileage runs on unprofitable routes on discounted tickets.

The lifetime status adds another carrot to those out pursuing partner promos to get to the million miler marks.
