It's useful to recommend places in a postive informative and factual way and I agree that a few streets in Montmartre are touristy at some times during the day - but it is clearly untrue to characterise the whole area as soulless. And the comparison you make with Montmartre and Circular Quay is perplexing and I do not understand at all.
It is also untrue to describe Circular Quay in the same sweeping way. Many find both places both atmospheric and great places to stay or visit. Circular Quay is a perfect place for a visitor to stay - particularly for the views and if access to ferries is regularly required. Nothing beats seeing the Manly ferry arrive from your window or balcony and wander down to get it. Or hopping off the Darling Harbour ferry straight through your front door. It's also a great place to people watch all day.
