Isn't this what travel insurance is for? Unless AA made her ill, ie food poisoning or faulty passenger item (seat, lav, overhead bin etc) causing her an injury, it's not really their fault is it?

Similarly I assume AA won't charge her for the cost associated with the unscheduled stop either, but then these days you never know!!
