Regarding upgrades with PMNWA:
(a). If I made reservations for two of us ... my business colleague and myself ... both of us were Platinum ... same fares .... he was always placed 1 notch higher on the 'Gate' upgrade list than me.
(b). If I made separate reservations ... did not matter who's reservation I made first ... I was always placed higher ... sometimes many notches higher.

Was told by a friendly GA that because he had joined NWA --- many years prior to my joining date, if we were booked on the same PNR/ Reservation ... with same fares... then he would be placed higher.
But the friendly GA could explain the why of the (b) happening.

Strange are the ways of airline upgrades, ticketing etc!!!
