I am trying different things and one can do this for more miles. I had on my return PTY-MIA-LAX but if one does PTY-MIA-SFO-LAX, it adds an extra 250 miles for MIA-SFO and approx 330 miles (500 minimum in some cases) for SFO-LAX.
I am sure the experts can come up with some nice routings.
I came up with this itinerary:
LAX-SFO 745A 905A AA 1920 (also a later flight works too)
SFO-MIA 845P 505A(+1) AA 272
MIA-PTY 945A 1140A
PTY-MIA 245P 6XXP (forgot exact time)
MIA-SFO 920A 1220PO the 225P outbound is available, I'll take that but it wasn't showing the low price for my itinerary)
$220++ (about $345 all in). over 8K base miles. This was over the labor day weekend. (Sept 4-7)
