I think the difference is that HPN caters to a different type of passenger than the other airports you mention. The area HPN serves is full of people who are more likely to pay for a full-fare ticket or to pay for first class. If UAL is offering a superior product on the route vis-a-vis AA, AA could stand to loose a significant chunk of revenue.

I agree, you thoughts make a lot of sense and I hope AA is considering that.
