Technically, United is buying Continental. Pragmatically, United is such a sick patient, and has been for so many years, it is transplanting its essence into Continental's healthier body. If you were right about how much latent affection there is for the UA brand, ...they wouldn't be doing things the way they are. Do you really think you are a more acute assessor of UA's brand strengths than the people who actually run the airline?
Not really, given the airline will be still called United Airlines. Given how lousy it is what with its E+ and worldwide network, how did they ever end up going with that name? Even calling it EnronAir would have been better by your argument.
One thing's for certain. Much like the AT&T logo during the idiocy of the Cingular days, the tulip has a chance to make it back someday in the future, if not before. The name Continental, like Cingular, will be expunged from public awareness for good. ^
Edit: Well, it will still be a tire brand I suppose.
