The verizon plan is not badly priced at $65 but I think it is quite restricted. I mean people may need to be on skype mobile while travelling, and I am unsure but I think call rates are still at international prices. You should have a look at renting a phone, have a look at www.fonmigo.com they are based in London and cover Europe. I don't really know about alternatives, they seem to be only worldwide sim's.
