OP, i take it you dont' fly at all, just by your comments and questions

First to expect a 747 or similar plane CA to Maui is not reasonable in today's market so don't think about it

saying its for elderly parents at least lets us understand why no change of plane is desired; the first post had me thinking you want everything for nothing

on that note; unless you are on the an AA 763, the difference is not measurable IMHO; just get them there; don't be hung up on why are they running a 738, 757 etc, just put them on, find a good seat assignment (am I wrong in assuming you know how to do that?), and arrange for help at the other end if you don't think that they are capable of taking care of luggage etc

Drive them to LAX; more frequency in case of IRROPS although I should say I'm not sure what HA's frequency is to SAN

but the final and repetetive point is > get over size; size doesn't matter
