My passport was always checked ONCE before I enter security. I've even asked if I need my passport anymore, and the agent told me to put it away.
Don't be so sure. At LGA last week flying AC to YYZ, my passport was first checked by the TSA agent at the podium approaching the security checkpoint. Then just prior to boarding 20-30 people including me were paged to the AC customer service counter for "secondary document inspection" (seemed to be everyone who had done web check-in). Finally, a TSA agent stood in the boarding line checking IDs a third time.
As for the body scanners at YYZ, most of the lines do not have them. You can normally just select a line that does not have one.
