I've never actually done this, but I think you can avoid the $20 charge by having the AAgent put the itinerary on hold, and then buying online. I know you can do this with paid tickets.
As has been mentioned, you can also have this done as round-trips instead of one-ways if the returns are available at the time you are trying to book the outbounds.
