That's always been my rule of thumb. I leave our apartment in Palermo 3 hours before flight time (I fly UA in the evening departure bank). I've done this at least 40 times in the past 8 years, and even when the autopista has been clogged, and with foul weather, I've always managed to get to the airport within 70 min.
