We had fun transporting a thick, cast glass plate recently. Because it was made from lead crystal, it showed up on the scanner like a big metal disc. Given the dimensions and weight I imagine the security staff must have thought: "Landmine!". They were completely non-plussed when the item was unwrapped to reveal clear glass.
We gave a similar plate to a friend travelling to NZ and she insisted on taking it as hand luggage to prevent breakage. I did warn her that apart from using up most of her baggage allowance she should expect security to be taking a keen interest.
