if you want to go to US west coast, then NZ J to LAX is far superior than VS J - same seats but infinitely better experience -and you can book cash/miles. Availability outbound is usually reasonable - coming back is much harder to find , but you could come back LX F from LAX or now SFO as well and connect in ZRH.
