Every EL I have seen has keyed doors, when I stayed at Hilton MSP the door was just left open, but the level was keyed. When I stayed at Americas Houstons, the door was kept closed but level wasn't keyed.
Only a few ELs I've been to have been keyed. All had someone manning the entrance. Ppl were asked their room#'s/names as they entered until the staff recognized them. The few ppl I saw trying to sneak in were turned away when the desk verified they were not allowed access.
