I think you're confusing a mechanical delay with a VDB delay... if you choose to VDB and your delay is greater than 6 hours they give you $600 in travel credits. A mechanical delay that causes you to have to stay overnight gets you a free hotel stay and a meal voucher..and then they will likely give you the option to choose between a discount coupon or some miles deposited to your account.. the discount coupon woud probably be $200-$350. Definitely not $600.
