There's no switch over, both counters remain independent and the thresholds remain the same. Reaching MVP status does not have any bearing on how quickly you reach MVP Gold. The qualification for MVP Gold is 40K AS or 50K AS+partners. It's NOT MVP + 20K/25K miles.
