Washington has no income tax, so the revenue base is built on a very high (10% +/-) sales tax, property tax revenues, and a huge glut of sneaky niche and "gotcha" taxes. One of their favorite ploys is to hit tourists with car rental and hotel stay surcharges. Rest assured that these revenues will be skimmed to pay for amenities for the locals, like sports stadia, that you as a visitor will be unlikely to enjoy much.
I recognize that, but we've rented there multiple times the past few years and I've never seen anything like this.
Looking at August 10 - August 11.:
Dollar - $92.99 base rate per day for a economy (Kia Rio)
Thrifty - $96 base rate per day for a economy (Hyuandi Accent)
Maybe I'm missing something, but that seems crazy.
