Sorry to challenge - but I think you just made that up! I'd wager a weighty hardback would do draw more blood than a ipad. The rule singles out electronic device not heavy objects.

Now i think about it, I've never been told specifically to stow the ipad - just turn it off.
I am simply using common sense. I tell people to stow everything heavy. People sitting with lap tops switched off and on their lap are told to stow them in a case/bag/seat pocket. Same as I tell people who place their multitude of mobile phones/blackberry/ipods that they may want to stow them as they will go flying off the seat if we abort take off etc...

I never at any time said that they case of them being a heavier more dangerous item whilst flying through the air was written down anywhere, as I said, just common sense. Something passengers should try using sometimes.
