Online booking has most certainly made it easier to compare prices, but people were doing it way before the internet was around.

Sunday travel section ads, calling all the airlines, travel agents, there was never really a day people would take the first price they were offered, they would try to find the best value. It's much easier to shop around now, but it's nothing new.
