One practical note, if you're going: As in 2000, there's a book available with the text in German and in English. If you've bought a package, the book comes with your ticket. If you've just bought a ticket, as we did, you can buy the book for 5 euros. Make sure you get one (in virtually every hotel or retail establishment in Oberammergau) before the play starts. But after dinner, when it gets dark, you will not be able to read the book during most of the second half of the performance. So bring along a little flashlight or book light so you can read along where you wish to when it's dark.

I was able to use a flashlight app on my Droid phone, and provided a couple of small flashlights for my in-laws when they saw the play a couple of days later.
