sunrisegirl - the sticky substance is strong enough to remove the red colouring on my elderly passport, though they are not as bad as AA's permanent baggage receipts, which BA in NYC removed when I wasn't looking, causing a permanent sticky spot...though I understand why you have been trained to do that if people throw away boarding cards!
+1 on this, though most airlines seem to do this these days. My passport is beginning to look a real mess after all the stuff gets stuck on to it. The worst I found were the stickers from Israeli security, which have been very difficult to remove. If I spot in time, I ask the checkin agents to stick the tags on the BP (which some do automatically) or on to my itinerary.
