For JAL, I suspect there is a scenario run as your hold expires and your space is cancelled:

Most important: JAL has a waiting list for seats that AA miles are not permitted to waitlist for.

1. If the seat that your flight is at zero award seats now and anyone is waitlisted for an award seat, the seat will not return to award inventory but will instead go to the waitlister if it is still considered an award space seat.

2. JAL decided to pull back award seats and thus will not reappear at all and will not go to waitlisters.

3. If the inventory is zero and JAL decided cancelled awards go back into inventory and there are no waitlisters, then the seat will reappear very quickly.
