I completely agree. I was providing the information only because someone else (maybe in the other thread) raised the issue of whether or not it was worth the time/trouble for a short layover.

What cost? The annual fee? They're not giving you the miles for the annual fee. Their cost for the miles far exceeds the annual fee. They're doing this to get you as a customer.

Right or wrong in whose opinion? The definitions of what is moral and what is ethical are very subjective. Societies develop laws to circumscribe behavior based on an overall societal view of what is and isn't moral or ethical.
