Markie, it is not just in remote rural areas: you can cross the border freely anywhere as there are no routine border controls (the infrastructure of border posts is not even there anymore. There is often no way to tell when you have crossed the border other than the change in the colour of the signs and the unit of distance (miles in the North and kilometres in the South). You can have occasional spot checks, of course, as

Going back to the OP's question, due to cooperation between UK and Irish immigration authorities, as others have mentioned, there is a risk that you might be denied entry if the immigration officer suspects that you might try to enter the UK or even that you might exceed your permitted stay in Ireland.
