Just to comment on this -- if you just visit Singapore briefly, it's very easy to come away with the impression that it's just "like in all large western cities", and there certainly are parts where this is the case (CBD, Orchard, Changi) at least appearancewise. However, if you stay for a while, you will come to realize that it's very much still Asia at heart.
